Growth in Youth and High School Rugby

October 15, 2024

Rugby is experiencing a significant transformation, particularly at the youth and high school levels, as more girls than ever are stepping onto the field. Recent statistics from the 2024/25 season reveal a remarkable trend: there are currently more registered girls than boys in high school rugby during the fall season. This shift not only highlights the growing popularity of the sport among girls but also signifies a positive bounce from the Women's 7’s Olympic success in earning a bronze over the summer.

Participation Trends

As of the current year, the total registrations across all rugby categories show a split of 60% male and 40% female participants. While males still represent the majority, the increasing number of female athletes is notable. The year-over-year growth from the 2022/23 to 2023/24 season has seen a 19% increase in female registrations, indicating a robust interest in the sport and a commitment to expanding opportunities for girls in rugby.

Real examples in the community

One shining example of this growth is Rugby NorCal's Fall High School Girls 7s League. Established to promote girls’ rugby teams on high school campuses, the league has experienced tremendous success. This year several schools are fielding multiple teams, showcasing the depth of interest from both public and private high schools in Northern California.

As Rugby NorCal aptly states, "This incredible success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our Rugby NorCal coaches and referees. We look forward to seeing this league continue to thrive and expand in the years ahead." This commitment from coaches and referees is essential for nurturing talent and ensuring that young athletes have the support they need to succeed.

Similarly, Rugby Pennsylvania have developed an initiative called  Emerging Girls Rugby  which has been making significant strides in promoting the sport. This program aims to increase female participation by offering clinics, camps, and competitions tailored specifically for young girls. By focusing on skill development and fostering a supportive environment, Emerging Girls Rugby is helping to build a strong foundation for future female athletes.

As part of the Emerging Girls Rugby campaign is the push to have Rugby 7s become a varsity High School sport for girls. Rugby PA have continued to add more school based programs each season. Currently, they have 11 programs who are directly affiliated with schools competing in Rugby PA competitions, with hopefully 2-3 more joining in the Spring of 2025.

Benefits of Rugby for Girls

The rise in female participation in rugby brings with it a myriad of benefits. The game of rugby promotes not only fitness, but also confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. Notoriously, rugby is identified for its strong cultural values and with the growing community around the female game, girls involved in rugby often develop a strong sense of community and belonging, forming friendships that can last a lifetime.

Programs like Emerging Girls Rugby emphasize these benefits by creating an inclusive environment that encourages girls to challenge themselves and grow both on and off the field. The sport fosters resilience and discipline, teaching players how to work together towards common goals, face challenges head-on, and celebrate victories—big and small. These skills are invaluable, equipping young women to tackle not just the challenges on the rugby field but also those they encounter in everyday life.

A Bright Future Ahead

The increasing number of girls participating in rugby is a promising sign for the future of the sport. As more high schools recognize the value of girls' rugby, we can anticipate further growth in participation and the establishment of more teams. Initiatives like Rugby NorCal's league and Emerging Girls Rugby serve as models demonstrating how targeted programs can inspire and empower young female athletes.

In conclusion, the rise of girls in youth and high school rugby marks a pivotal moment in the sport's history. With increasing registrations, supportive coaching, and a growing community, girls are finding their place on the rugby field. As we look ahead, the potential for growth and empowerment in girls' rugby appears limitless.
